Get Out On Main Street – Tuesday, May 20th, 2008

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Newark, Delaware – May 18, 2008 – A small group of University of Delaware students, surprised by the lack of awareness surrounding the two recent international disasters in Burma (Myanmar) and China, have prepared a Get Out On Main Street Campaign for this Tuesday.

The Get Out On Main Street Day, scheduled for Tuesday, May 20, 2008, was the result of deciding to raise awareness and funds for the two disasters, and after looking at several alternative events, the group decided to contact local businesses on Main Street, downtown Newark, to coordinate a massive fundraiser and awareness day.

The result is an event where students and people can go to any of the 18+ participating businesses, shop and state they are there for this fundraiser, and have 5-15% of their purchase amount go to Red Cross’s aid efforts in Burma and China.

The event planned under less than a week’s short notice, is still being finalized, but has already received some attention from the state paper, the Delaware News Journal (April 17, 2008 B1) and may also have an article in the upcoming issue of the college newspaper, The Review.

The event is open to everyone, and everyone is encouraged to come out on Main Street this Tuesday, wearing black or dark clothing (in remembrance of those who have died) and to shop at any of the participating businesses. Just make sure you mention you are there for the fundraiser!

Current list of participating business: AT&T Store (15% of all purchases), Bloom (10% of all non-book purchases), Caffé Gelato (5% of all purchases), Clothes in the Past Lane (10% of all purchases over $10.00), Cold Stone (10% of all purchases), Delaware Book Exchange (10% of all non-textbook purchases), Gecko (10% of purchases excluding consignment & on-sale items), Korner Diner (5% of all purchases), Learning Station (10% of all purchases, excluding lamination & gift cards), Margherita’s Pizza (10% of all purchases), Newark Cinema Center (10% of all concession purchases), Newark Deli and Bagel (10% of all purchases), Newark Newsstand (10% of all purchases, except cigarettes & newspaper), Santa Mexican Grill (10% of all purchases), Sweet N’ Sassy (10% of all cupcake purchases), Two Brothers (10% of all purchases), UPS Store  (10% of all copies; other products/services depend), You’ve Been Framed (5-10% of all purchases).
